TOM’S FAVORITE HEM

I don’t know who to credit for this hem-marking idea. I have been using it myself and teaching it to students in one form or another for years.

The idea of weaving doubled weft rows goes against my better judgment. We all know that this is technically incorrect, because if you weave a double weft row you’re weaving a flaw into the fabric. But this wonderful little intentionally woven flaw at the ends of your woven piece can help greatly when you are making an even rolled hem.

The advantage comes because with this “flaw” you will see that you are weaving a subtle straight horizontal line that becomes your fold line. By weaving the double lines at different widths you reduce the chances of having bulk in the hem.

Try weaving a sample of this hem first on a warp that’s left over from another project. Remove it from the loom and take it to the ironing board, fold the fabric on the doubled lines, and press it with a steam iron. The fold will turn easily and you will be able to see the hem line more clearly than than if you try to fold and hem without the lines.

Here are two examples for your consideration. One is for a plain weave hem and the other is for a twill. I think you will like what you see and use this again and again on your projects.
